Big plants for a small garden - suggestions needed?
We have a tiny back yard 4.5 metres x 5 metres, currently covered in concrete. I've been told to go for height in a small garden. We can dig up some of the concrete, but I'd prefer to have plants in pots and decking. Does anyone have suggestions for plants that make a big impact that won't die on me?
The back of the house faces East and the garden gets good light most of the day.
It's in London
Camelia's are good and very hardy, I have some lilies that are 6ft+ tall, but unsure where to get them in the UK as we smuggled them back from Cyprus. Head down to your garden centre, they'll know. If you fancy growing your own veg, runner beans get a lot of height.
Monbretia are a stunning orange colour and literally impossible to kill and spread like crazy (my mate has some and it's seeded in neighbouring gardens).
Forsythia is a nice shrub which flowers early spring, but takes a lot of looking after if you don't want it to invade your house - but it'll grow anywhere and might be good at the far end of the garden as it's a good privacy protector - gets very high and needs trimming down almost weekly in the summer months.
Either way, good luck!
