I am seeing this question come up quite a lot, and have enjoyed seeing many responses on the internet.
From my research, I discovered that it was the custom for ancient people to bury their childrens' teeth in the belief that witches coveted them to use in spells. (It is a common belief that a spell can be cast against someone if you have something of theirs: hair, nails, etc). Eventually, the Tooth Fairy came about as a protector of the teeth. She would come and take them far away where they would be safe.
The first mention of a Tooth Fairy in literature seems to be in the late 1800's. It was a story of a Tooth Mouse or Rat who collected teeth. The Tooth Mouse is common in Spain, France, Italy, and Scotland. Did you know that? I didn't! The Tooth Fairy became very common in the United States in the early 1900's.
I recently saw a question online from a child wondering if the Tooth Fairy was an angel. My first response was to dismiss that theory as sweet and nothing more, but then I decided to see what I could find out. I originally just wanted to say that angels live in Heaven and fairies live in gardens and forests here on Earth. On Wikipedia, I saw that indeed many people hold that when the angels revolted those who were in Heaven remained angels, those that were in Hell became demons, and those on Earth became fairies. Interesting, huh?
